Why doesn't the U.S. have its own version of this terrific show that originates in Australia?
Eco House Challenge takes two families and cuts off their vital services and then replaces them one by one as they 'meet consumption levels based on what scientist say will help save the planet'.
Now this is reality TV that I can watch and act on!
Most people in the Western world live beyond their Eco means. In fact if every one in the world lived like we do we would need another three whole planets. So we challenged two every day families, the Shepherd' and the Edwards', to take up the Eco House Challenge. The Challenge consists of four key hotspots; water, energy, transport and waste and the aim for each family is to reduce their use of each hotspot to a scientifically acceptable level.
After a comprehensive Eco audit, The guy in charge of the challenge, Glenn, turns off their gas, locks their bins, switches off their water, clamps their cars and switches off their power. No water, no transport, no energy and no waste removal.
After 24 hours one Eco Hotspot will be returned and a consumption level set based on what scientist say will help save the planet.
Once that level is reached another hotspot will be returned. The families will not get their lives back until they reduce their consumption, have all the hotspots balanced and learn to live sustainably. With the help of Eco Coach Tanya Ha, they have just weeks to do what we all have to do in a few decades.
If they can pass the Eco House challenge and help save the planet then so can we.
